Kargil is a town which lies in the Kargil district in the union territory of Ladakh. It is the second largest town in Ladakh after Leh and it lies at an elevation of 2,676mts. While in Kargil, visit Sonmarg and Baltal valley and also the Zoji La Pass, the highest mountain pass in the Kashmir valley. Other famous stopovers while going from Kargil to Leh are Nankila Peak, Fotu La, which is a mountain pass lying in Zanskar Range of the Himalayas at an elevation of 4,108mts.
Lamayuru or Yuru Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery at an elevation of 3,510mts. It holds the distinction of being the latest and the oldest monasteries in Ladakh with 150 monks residing here. According to legends, Lamayuru Valley was a lake filled with serpents. Arahat Madhyantika, a person responsible for spreading Buddhism made some offering to the Nagas here and with the crack of his walking stick, a hole was made and all the water was drained out. Since that incident, the place is considered holy and sacred.
Leh, the highest plateau in the Himalayas of India is a desert city, is the capital of northern India’s Ladakh UT(Union Territory). Originally a stop for trading caravans, Leh is now known for its Buddhist sites and nearby trekking areas. Massive 17th-century Leh Palace, modeled on the Dalai Lama’s former home (Tibet’s Potala Palace), overlooks the old town’s bazaar and mazelike lanes.
