Overview

Sandakphu-Phalut Trek: A Glimpse

The Sandakphu-Phalut trek is a high-altitude route in West Bengal's Singalila National Park. Reaching 11,930 ft, it is one of the Indian treks offering a single-frame view of four 8,000m giants: Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. Trekkers experience a unique "border ballet," staying in rustic tea houses while crisscrossing the India-Nepal boundary. Its spiritual centerpiece is the "Sleeping Buddha" massif.

Route Map: Sandakphu Phalut Trek

Base Camp → Sepi (6,900 ft) → Samanden (7,545 ft) → Gorkhey (7,500 ft) → Phalut (11,811 ft) → Thokum → Aal → Sandakphu (11,930 ft) → Timburey → Srikhola → NJP

The entire route lies within the Singalila National Park along the Singalila Ridge, running parallel to the Indo-Nepal border. A Singalila National Park entry permit is mandatory and is typically arranged by your trekking operator. The trail alternates between dense forest, open ridgeline, alpine meadows, and riverside paths, making it one of India's most varied and scenic long-distance treks.

How Long Is the Trek from Sandakphu to Phalut?

The direct distance from Sandakphu to Phalut is 21 km, and it takes approximately 7–8 hours to cover on foot. The route follows the Singalila Ridge, staying mostly flat with a steep final push to Phalut's summit. The total Sandakphu Phalut trek distance, from base camp Sepi back to Srikhola, spans 68 km over 7 days, averaging around 10–15 km per day. Every kilometre of this trail rewards trekkers with views of some of the world's highest peaks, making the distance feel entirely worthwhile.

Is the Sandakphu Phalut Trek Easy or Difficult?

The Sandakphu Phalut trek falls squarely in the easy to moderate difficulty category, challenging enough to be rewarding, but accessible enough for first-time trekkers with reasonable fitness. The daily distances (10–15 km) are the primary challenge, not extreme altitude. Steep sections appear near Phalut and Sandakphu, and high-altitude weather can be unpredictable. Basic endurance and the ability to sustain long walks (10–15 km per day) are essential. The tea house infrastructure and well-marked Singalila Ridge trail also make navigation and recovery far more comfortable than wilderness expeditions.

Is Phalut Higher Than Sandakphu?

No, Sandakphu is higher. Sandakphu stands at 11,930 ft (3,636 m), making it the highest peak in West Bengal. Phalut, the second-highest point on the Singalila Ridge, sits at 11,811 ft (3,600 m), just 119 feet lower. Both peaks sit at the tri-junction of West Bengal, Sikkim, and Nepal. While Sandakphu claims the height title, Phalut offers equally spectacular panoramas, including sweeping views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and the entire Kanchenjunga massif forming the iconic Sleeping Buddha silhouette.

What is the sleeping Buddha formation in the Sandakphu-Phalut trek?

The Sleeping Buddha is a breathtaking, natural panoramic silhouette formed by multiple peaks of the Kanchenjunga mountain range, including Kumbhakarna, Kanchenjunga, and Pandim, seen from Sandakphu and Phalut. It resembles a giant, reclining figure with a clearly defined head, chest (Kanchenjunga), and feet, best viewed during sunrise as a major highlight of the trek

Best Time for the Sandakphu Phalut Trek

The Sandakphu Phalut trek offers distinct experiences across seasons, but the best time to visit is during spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November). In spring, the Singalila Ridge transforms into a vibrant landscape with blooming rhododendrons in shades of red, pink, and white. The weather remains pleasant, with clear mornings and occasional light snow at higher altitudes. Summer (May–June) is also comfortable, though pre-monsoon showers may begin towards late May.

Autumn brings crisp air and some of the clearest mountain views, making it ideal for witnessing peaks like Everest and Kanchenjunga. Monsoon months (July–September) should be avoided due to heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and poor visibility. Winter (December–February) offers snow-covered trails and dramatic scenery but requires better preparation for cold conditions. Regardless of the season, temperatures drop significantly after sunset, so carrying 4–5 warm layers is essential for a safe and comfortable trekking experience.

Why Sandakphu Phalut Is a Must-Do Trek

  • Only trek in India offering simultaneous views of both Mt. Everest and Mt. Kanchenjunga
  • Witness four of the world's five highest peaks, Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu, from a single viewpoint
  • The iconic Sleeping Buddha formation is visible across multiple points on the route
  • Trek through the biodiverse Singalila National Park, home to wildlife such as red pandas and Himalayan black bears (rarely spotted).
  • Walk the Indo-Nepal border with cultural immersion in Sherpa, Rai, and Lepcha communities
  • Unique tea house stays throughout, warm, hospitable, and distinctly Himalayan in character
  • Sunrise over the Sleeping Buddha from Sandakphu summit is a once-in-a-lifetime experience
  • Suitable for first-timers and experienced trekkers alike, the perfect introduction to the Eastern Himalayas
